Stephen’s first home run at Cooperstown Dreamspark

It was Sunday morning, June 14, 2009, bottom of the first inning. Stephen Skeggs was up to bat for the first time in the tournament. There were 2 outs. Drew Hubbard was on 2nd base and Alex Keown was on 1st base. The Eagles were losing 3-0 at this point in the game. Skeggs steps into the batter’s box with a count of 1 ball and 1 strike. On the next pitch, he launches the ball over the left field wall to tie the ballgame. The Eagles ended up winning the game 15-3 by slaughter rule.
The video is a little grainy and small here but I figured I’d capture it as best as possible. You can view it in HD (still a bit grainy) on my Vimeo page if you wish.
24 hours till Cooperstown

Well, in less than 24 hours Stephen and I will be on the plane, officially beginning our Cooperstown, NY journey. It’s going to be an action packed week and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you. Not only do I hope to post plenty of Tweets during the day but I’m hoping to post up a blog entry each night with pictures and maybe even video footage of the days events.
For those of you who really want to keep up with things, “play-by-play”, I recommend that you follow me on Twitter. Also, you can visit the Cooperstown Dreamspark website and navigate to the DreamsPark TV link and actually watch our games right on your computer screen. (You will have to register with them. In other words you have to be willing to give them your email address). Be aware that they are only supporting one standards based web browser which is Firefox so if you don’t have Firefox installed on your computer, click here to download and install it. I’ve been watching some games on my computer during the past couple of days and I can tell, we’re going to have a blast.

L-Screens are important

In our continuing journey to prepare for our trip to Cooperstown, I’ve been taking Stephen to do extra workouts regularly. After work on Thursday of last week we went up to the Flowery Branch High School field to take some reps. They have batting cages up there but unfortunately, they don’t leave their L-Screens in the cages. They only get those out of the Field House when they need to use them. For those of you who might not know, the L-Screen is that thing that you see pitchers stand behind when they are throwing batting practice. And as you can see, based on the picture, they really are necessary.
While I was pitching to Stephen, he blistered a ball right into my ankle on my right foot. YES, there was a quick “vocabulary” lesson. (I am human). But I really thought that there might have been some bone damage immediately. It still hurts really bad and as you can see, it doesn’t look real nice either. I would say that I learned my lesson from this but I can’t really. Once I got over the initial pain, I threw him another bucket of balls. That is until he hit me on the outside of my left knee. That’s when I decided it was time to work on letting him do some pitching.

Gearing up for Cooperstown

Many of you know that Stephen and I are going to be heading up to Cooperstown, NY soon for a week of great baseball fun. We leave next Friday, June 12. While we are certainly looking forward to all of the baseball games that we’ll get to watch and that Stephen will get to play in. We’re also really excited about getting to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame. I’ve never been to Cooperstown or the Baseball Hall of Fame, but to me, as a huge baseball fan, I can definitely say that going there, with my son, is totally on my “bucket list” and very high on that list I might add. (Ok, I don’t really have a “bucket list” but if I did, that would be in the top 5 for sure).
I was talking about the trip with Stephen a couple of days ago and to my surprise, he told me that he was probably more excited about getting to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame than getting play in a bunch of baseball games. I can honesty say, that comment made me a bit emotional. I know some people would say that baseball is just a game, but to us, it’s so much more. I guess you could say it’s a way of life in our family.

I hope to get to post daily while I’m there and plan on including plenty of pictures, game highlight commentary, and of course I’ll be bragging on Stephen as if he hung the moon.
Who wants to smash a pie in Jay’s face?

As I’ve mentioned in some previous posts, my son Stephen is planning to take a trip to Cooperstown New York to play baseball next summer. We are doing a fund raiser in January where we are selling Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. We’re selling them for $6 per box. That is $1 higher than what you’d pay if you drove all the way to Krispy Kreme and picked them up. But, we are actually delivering them to you so surely that’s worth the extra dollar to you, right?
Our personal goal is to sell 35 dozen. We’ve already got orders for about 10 dozen so we’re only 25 away. If you’d like to help us out and order a dozen or three please send me an email at skeggsjp@me.com.
Here’s where the smashing a pie in my face comes into play. Everyone who buys a dozen will get their name put in a hat, we’ll draw a name out, and the person whose name gets drawn will get to smash a pie in my face. This is good for every dozen that you buy, so if you buy 5 dozen, your name goes in the hat 5 times. We’ll record the pie smash on video and I’ll post it here afterward.
Please let me know how many dozen you want before Monday, January 12, 2009.
I know that some of you are either watching your weight or maybe don’t like doughnuts. (I can’t imagine). If this is the case, would you consider just donating $6 to our cause? If so, donations are tax deductible. And, they’re as good as buying a dozen doughnuts which means your name goes in the hat and you might get to smash a pie in my face. If you want to write a check you can make it payable to CH Eagles Black, Inc. Go ahead and write it this year and you can get the tax deduction for calendar year 2008. Hah, see, I just saved you the extra $1 plus some.
