Falcons won the tournament championship, btw

Falcons take championshipSo, I’ve been extremely busy with helping Ginger get the boxes unpacked and getting everything settled in here at the new house. Naturally, I haven’t blogged much as a result. Stephen’s baseball team did end up winning the Hall County Middle School Championship for both the regular season and the County Tournament. I’ve attached a copy of the newspaper clipping that came out in the Gaineville Times the day after their big win.

I’m very proud of Stephen and how well he did playing up with 7th and 8th graders this season. He finished the season very strong with a .425 batting average. His on base percentage was very high too. While I didn’t calculate it during the season, I feel certain that it was probably .700 or better.

Stephen is going to pick up and play a few more games with his old team, the Collins Hill Eagles and will travel to Cooperstown, NY with the team in June to play a tournament. Thanks to all who followed us this baseball season and to all those who have coached Stephen in the past. Your support and efforts mean a lot to Stephen as well as Ginger and me.

Falcons advance to tournament championship

FalconsThe CW Davis Falcons routed the East Hall Vikings yesterday with a final score of 16-4. This win advances the Falcons to the tournament championship which will be played tonight, April 27, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at Laurel Park in Gainesville, GA.

There were numerous highlights to yesterdays game. Alden Jackson started on the hill and went 1 full inning allowing only 1 run. Brad Brown pitched very well for innings 2 and 3. Dylan Streets entered in relief of Brown and pitched the 4th and 5th innings to close out the game.

Offensively, the Falcons performed very well. Big Mac Combs continues to hit the ball well. Combs hit a singe and a double on the day. The double went to Center Field and the poor player let the ball roll through his legs all the way to the fence so Combs ended up scoring on the hit. Stephen Skeggs went 1 for 2 on the day with a double down the Left Field line, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a strike-out. He scored 3 runs on the day. Skeggs improves his average to .459 for the season. Andrew Miles had a great day at the plate with 2 singles and a double with 5 RBI’s on the day. Brandon Benevento put a double down the Left Field line and got an RBI. Dylan Gibeau returned to the Falcons line-up after being on the DL for the entire regular season. Gibeau was the DH and went 3 for 3 on the day with 2 singles and a double.

The Falcons will face the Gainesville Red Elephants tonight for the championship game. We hope to take it all.

Falcons take first place with win over Gainesville

CW Davis Falcons

The CW Davis Falcons middle school baseball team has finished regular season play in 1st place. Last night’s 8-4 win over the Gainesville Red Elephants sealed the Falcons 1st place spot. This was the final regular season game and the Falcons ended up with a record of 11-3.

Last nights highlights were plentiful. Mack Combs continues to stay hot at the plate and had a double and single on the night. Stephen Skeggs had an awesome night at the plate as well going 3 for 5 on the night with 2 RBI’s, 3 runs scored, and a stolen base. Cameron Warner scorched a ball to Right Center field for a double. Andrew Miles also hit a double last night. Brandon Benevento, Dylan Streets, Duece Davidson, and Micah McWhorter all hit or put the ball in play to advance a runner or bring in a run during last nights game too.

Defensively, Brandon Benevento dominated on the mound once again. Benevento went 6 innings and threw 8 strike outs. Andrew Miles entered in relief in the bottom of the 7th inning and struck out the side.

Congratulations to the CW Davis Falcons, the first ever Hall County Middle School Baseball League Champions.

Falcons split their last 2, record now 7-3

FalconsThe CW Davis Falcons faced the South Hall Knights on Tuesday evening, April 14, 2009. It was a long night at the ballpark and in the end the Falcons just didn’t have enough juice to push past the Knights. The final score was 9-7. It was obvious that the team had not been together for a game or practice in 2 weeks.

There were some positive notes for Tuesday’s game against the Knights. Mack Combs hit a triple deep to Right Center Field. Stephen Skeggs went 2 for 2 on the night improving his batting average to .500 for the season.

Last night, the Falcons played the Chestatee War Eagles. It was quite a blow out with a final score of 14-0. There were plenty of highlights that could be mentioned, but the most outstanding of all was the pitching performance of Brandon Benevento. The kid was on it all night. Benevento pitched the entire game which was called after 5 innings. He threw 46 pitches on the night and nearly threw a perfect game. Unfortunately, Benevento did give up 1 hit in the bottom of the 5th inning. Even so, a 1 hitter with no walks with just 46 pitches is insanely off the hook. That’s an average of 9.2 pitches per inning folks. I doesn’t get much better than that.

Offensively, it seems like everyone in the line-up reached base at least once and most reached either on a hit or by putting the ball in play. Stephen Skeggs entered the game in the bottom of the 4th inning and reached base on a Fielders Choice during his at bat in the top of 5th. He also came around to score.

We play again on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Alberta Banks Park and then again on Sunday April 19, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Laurel Park.

Davis Falcons improve record to 6-2

FalconsThe CW Davis Falcons won big again last night against Gainesville Red Elephants. This was a rematch that every player on the team was looking forward to, considering how the last game finished. The Falcons cleaned house with a final score of 13-4.

Andrew Miles pitched 4 solid innings and allowed only 2 runs. Brandon Benevento entered the game in relief in the 5th inning and then closed the game out in the 6th. Benevento also allowed 2 runs.

Micah McWhorter was super hot in Right Field last night. He made two incredible catches that would certainly have made the ESPN web gems segment. Catcher, Mack Combs made quite a few great stops behind the plate and threw out a runner trying to steal 3rd base. Offensively, Combs also burned the Red Elephants Center Fielder in the bottom of the 5th inning with a lead off double over the player’s head. Andrew Miles also pulled a double down the left field line. As well, Stephen Skeggs burned the left fielder with what should have been a double but unfortunately, it looked like Brad Brown slipped while he was running from first base so Stephen was held to a Single. Nevertheless, Skeggs went 1 for 2 on the night with 2 walks and a run scored. Skeggs ups his average to .458 for the season.

We play next on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at Laurel Park north of Gainesville. (Assuming the weather cooperates).
